I will work for free

Posted on: in General | 6 Comments »

This weekend I was attending a seminar by Ben Tiggelaar. A bit like the dutch Anthony Robbins. The content of the seminar was solid, but most of it I already knew and had been doing the past month after I started Erronis.

But one thing he said resonated with me. He was explaining that helping other people is one of the best things you can do for your own happiness. And then mentioned, almost casually, that if you have your own business, instead of cold calling you should help people. And added that networking was better for business than cold calling anyway.
And I agree. So from now on I will work a maximum of 4 hours per week for free for anyone. Small companies, big companies, individuals or non-profits. No strings attached.
Here are some examples of what I can help you with in 4 hours:

Lean Startup

  • Presentation: Why should we be applying Lean Startup techniques in our big corporation
  • Presentation: “Why you should only do Agile if you really know what you want”
  • Brainstorm: What hypotheses can we define in this situation?
  • Brainstorm: What hidden assumptions do we have and how to we define an experiment to test them?

Agile

  • Quick Scan: Quick evaluation of your current practices
  • Discussion: Sparring session with team/scrum master or agile coach
  • Facilitate: Retrospective

Storytelling

  • Presentation: The power of storytelling
  • Presentation: Why will storytelling make us better consultants?
  • Brainstorm: How to bring company and personal values alive through storytelling

IT

  • Quick Scan: How can we improve our development team
  • Presentation: Why you should deploy daily
  • Presentation: Architecture is mostly communication
  • Hands on: Introduction to NodeJS and Redis. 6000 requests/sec on a laptop

These are just examples of things I can help you with. If you think I can help you with anything else please do not hesitate to ask.

  1. Great initiative! I like your approach to doing business: sincere and knowledgeable. If we can improve this way of thinking in companies I believe we can build great environments to work.

    Good luck!

  3. Wow. What a great concept. I think I will implement the same thing. Makes so much sense. After all, the real reason I got into this business is for the joy of being able to help people. So I have often done these freebies anyway, whitout offering it as such a clear concept as you do. I love it!

  4. We know the ‘work for free’ way of life. Our company has a lot of that. We find that all participants feel freer and more motivated without any money. Once money comes into the equation, things change.

  5. Hello. I read about your “I will work for free” idea a year or more ago and thought “Well, of course. How great is that.” But only now I realize I WANT your help and advice; and I need it. We are a small startup in the service area (ie not tech development) with what we are convinced is a great service. The market is large; the feedback from our first customers was excellent. After that, nothing has happened. We have started with customer discovery to find areas and people we can help; we have been interating carefully; and are testing a new MVP in a specific market. But something is missing and we can’t identify it. I would love someone to listen to our story and give some killer guidance. A pivot is looming but we hesitate. Would you like to have a go at us?! Thank you.
